We are delighted to announce that Chris McLarnon will take over as the new Chair of the Welsh Gymnastics Board of Directors from 1st April 2025 from Bev Smith. Chris brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and passion for sport that will support our mission to lead and govern successful gymnastics for all across Wales.
Bev Smith, reflected on her time as Chair of the board stating:
‘It has been a privilege and a pleasure, and I will always be grateful to the coaches, administrators, and the wider gymnastics family for your hard work, determination, and dedication. I will be leaving Welsh Gymnastics in good shape and in very good hands.’
Chris is committed to driving Welsh Gymnastics forward, with a particular focus on enhancing digital collaboration. In an ever-evolving digital landscape, he is dedicated to staying informed on the latest developments in social media to ensure it is used safely and effectively. Through this, Chris aims to amplify the reach and advocacy of Welsh Gymnastics, helping to share our successes and opportunities with a wider audience.
While Chris does not have a background in gymnastics, he deeply values the physical and mental health benefits of such a demanding sport. His sporting journey began with football during his school years and time at Cardiff University, later expanding to include basketball, where he captained Royal Navy teams. To this day, he remains an avid hill walker, always looking for ways to stay active and promote the importance of sport within communities.
Chris’s professional background is equally impressive. A former Naval Officer, he served both at sea and in Iraq with the Royal Marines before transitioning into the private sector. Over the past decade, he has successfully delivered cutting-edge technological solutions to clients across the Defence, Intelligence, and Financial Services industries. With two children navigating the digital world, at university and in year 13, Chris understands the challenges and opportunities of communicating effectively in today’s fast-paced, competitive environment.
Incoming Chair. Chris McLarnon, looked forward to his tenure, stating:
‘With our new, 10 year Strategy focussed on our ambition to enable gymnastics to thrive, I am joining as Chair at the most exciting of times! We have significant challenges to overcome, but both the Board and Executive team of WG are ready to deliver success via our committed people, exceptional places and governance & safeguarding practices. Having been a Non-Exec Director for over 4 years I know our people and the environment we operate in very well, and so am looking forward immensely to helping lead WG in delivering on our ambitious Strategy’
We are excited for the future of Welsh Gymnastics under Chris’ leadership and look forward to his contributions as we continue to grow and support gymnastics for all across Wales. Please join us in welcoming Chris to his new role!
