It was an evening of celebration at St Tydfils Gymnastics last night as the club toasted 50 years in existence as well as the grand opening of their new facility.

Members, coaches and families – past and present – along with a host of other invited guests gathered to share memories of the past half a century as well as looking forward to an exciting future.

The special evening also gave the club the chance to honour Julie Phillips who, in 2020, was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to gymnastics in Merthyr Tydfil.

“The club has got a long history; the demand is there in Merthyr for gymnastics,” said managing director Melissa Anderson ahead of the opening.

“We’ve kids that come now and their parents have done gymnastics at St Tydfils, their grandparents have done gymnastics at St Tydfils, so gymnastics and St Tydfils is part of the Merthyr history of culture I would say.”
